Albert Memorial Clock Tower
17 Queens Square
Belfast BT1 3FF, Northern Ireland, United Kingdom
Closely resembling London's Big Ben, this 34-meter (113-ft) clock tower was completed in 1870. The tower was built as a memorial to Queen Victoria's husband, Prince Albert, and a looming statue of Albert himself stands before it. The design of the tower utilizes a mix of French and Italian Gothic styles, and it stands in Queen's Square, not far from the Customs House. Known locally as "the leaning tower of Belfast," it was originally built on unstable, muddy marsh, which has caused the subsidence of the foundation over the years and sent the tower leaning more than a meter (4 ft) to one side.

Bullring
Bullring, Upper Mall West
Birmingham, United Kingdom
This continually evolving commercial mall takes its name from the metal ring used in the Middle Ages to tether bulls before they were slaughtered. It has been the epicenter of the city's trading history throughout the last eight centuries. In the 19th century, the area became notorious in British history for rioting connected to the wide-scale working-class political movements. Today, the Bullring contains a glossy, newly refurbished shopping mall. One of the most modern malls in Britain, the Bullring attracts more than 30 million shoppers annually. Thousands of aluminum discs adorn the curving, organic structure, creating an effect reminiscent of a sequined dress.
Cadbury World
Linden Road
Bournville, Birmingham, United Kingdom
Formed by two Quaker brothers to offer drinking chocolate as an alternative to alcohol, Cadbury's became an institution in 19th-century Britain. The family even built a town to support their rural factory at Bournville Village, a revolutionary move a century before strip malls. Nearly two centuries later, Cadbury remains the nation's most popular chocolatier. Cadbury World attracts 500,000 chocolate-hungry visitors annually. Exhibits include an exploration of the history of chocolate, a replica of John Cadbury's original 1824 Bull Street store, a series of the company's best-loved commercials and advertisements, and a sneak peek at the packaging machinery. Chocolate lovers will be pleased to find a huge chocolate store with all the company's favorite products at factory prices.
Central Necropolis
Castle Street
Glasgow, United Kingdom
Originally named Fir Park for its woody surroundings, this peaceful cemetery was dug out of the hillside in the early 19th century. It offers an unusual insight into the city's history and development, featuring the resting place of many of the merchants and industrialists (as well as firebrand preacher John Knox) whose ships and factories turned the city into the workshop of the Victorian world. Wander among these massive sandstone monuments, and you'll see sculpture and architecture by some of Scotland's foremost creative minds. Having made their money trading in rum, spices, and tobacco, Glasgow's newly rich competed with each other even in death, commissioning architects like Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Alexander Thomson, and John Bryce (the winner of the competition to plan the park) to design elaborate memorials. Interestingly, the Necropolis was initially planned as an underground ossuary, in order to prevent body snatchers (known as "resurrection men") from stealing corpses to sell to medical schools.
Chamberlain Square
Birmingham, United Kingdom
This handsome inner city square takes its name from Joseph Chamberlain, the shoemaker's son who became Birmingham's mayor in 1873. He was hugely influential in turning the industrial boomtown into a modern city, driving initiatives to clear the old slums, lay down water and sanitation networks, create public parks, and improve the state education system. He also sired a political dynasty: his eldest son Austen became Foreign Secretary, while second son Neville became Prime Minister-though the latter attained little but infamy with his appeasement policy towards Nazi Germany. Several of the city's grandest buildings ring the square, including the Town Hall and Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery. The Birmingham City Library's steps curve to form a little amphitheater used for a variety of public functions.
Charlotte Square
Edinburgh, United Kingdom
Robert Adam, the architect of what is sometimes described as the most perfect Georgian square in Britain, died before he could see his plans realized. Located at the west end of George Street, this square was the last piece of James Craig's sandstone jigsaw puzzle, completed in 1820. Now, it is part of the New Town, which has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can tour number 28 (the National Trust for Scotland) and number 7 (featuring Chippendale furniture and Wedgwood china). Number 6 is Bute House, official residence of the First Minister of Scotland. The historic architecture has had some even more historic tenants over the last 150 years: World War I Field Marshal Haig was born at number 24, while Joseph Lister, pioneer of the antiseptic, lived at number 9.

Fish Market
3 Albert Quay
Aberdeen, United Kingdom
If you've had enough of grand granite streets, head down to Albert Basin before the city wakes up. From dawn until 8 a.m. every weekday, Aberdeen's Fish Market is a little cauldron of activity beside the harbor. Just as they've done for centuries, the fishermen lay out their catch in ice-filled crates. There's nothing fancy about this, it's a modern warehouse with wash-down concrete floors and fluorescent strip lights. But there's something fascinating in the ritual of it all: the dull thrum of diesel engines and winches from the boats outside mixed with the hoarse cries of seagulls; the barking of sellers marking up prices; the grid of crates packed with haddock and dab and sole and cod; and the scrape of the crates on the floor as men in rubber boots and rubber gloves use hooked metal rods to drag them away.
Gas Street Basin
52 Gas Street
Birmingham, United Kingdom
Back in the 18th century, this canal basin would have been crammed with barges and boats bringing raw materials to the city's booming businesses. Over a hundred boats per day once passed through, but their reign was short-lived; the rise of trucks and trains doomed Birmingham's canals. Today, the backwater has become a place for pleasure boats and leisure time. Renovations have restored redbrick walkways and bridges, cafés and pubs have popped up, and weekday evenings buzz with office workers enjoying a pint or two beside the waterside. Gas Street Basin will show you just how dramatically an industrial space can be re-created. Look out for the wooden bar separating the two distinct canals-they were owned by different companies determined not to share their water! The basin's name commemorates the street, which was the first in Birmingham to get gas lighting installed.

Murals of West Belfast
Falls Road and Shankill Road
Belfast, United Kingdom
No visit to Belfast would be complete without viewing the touching and sometimes shocking murals of West Belfast, which were painted during the worst of The Troubles to convey various political and religious messages. While murals can be seen all over Belfast, the largest concentration is along the Falls and Shankill roads, two streets that run roughly parallel to one another but have traditionally been home to opposing sides. Along the Falls Road, most of the murals depict scenes of Irish Republican nationalism, including the green, white, and orange Irish flag and prominent Republican historical figures. The murals on the Shankill Road, by contrast, show often-violent images of masked gunmen and other Loyalist images. Not all the subject matter is partisan, and not all is contemporary: a few murals commemorate sporting or historical events, and The Red Hand of Ulster illustrates an ancient legend concerning the red hand on the Ulster flag.

William Wallace Statue
Opposite His Majesty's Theatre
Rosemount Viaduct
Aberdeen, United Kingdom
This Scottish patriot has been the center of many tales (including Mel Gibson's 1995 movie Braveheart, which revived his medieval legend for a modern audience). Physically powerful and smoldering with anger at the English oppressors who taxed Scotland, he became an outlaw after murdering several Englishmen. Scots recognized his martial talents and flocked to his cause, creating an army that wreaked havoc across the north of England. Betrayed by Scottish aristocrats and given up by a friend, Wallace was captured after the battle of Falkirk and suffered a particularly grisly fate, even by 14th-century standards. After being paraded through England, he was hanged, drawn, and quartered in 1305. His severed limbs were sent to Newcastle, Berwick, Perth, and Aberdeen, the city where he is commemorated with an 1888 statue and a plinth that reads: "I tell you a truth, liberty is the best of all things."
