Government Administrative Divisions
The United Kingdom (UK) is a parliamentary constitutional monarchy with a unitary system of government. For complicated historical reasons—and because the UK has never had a written constitution to delineate the structure of its government, but rather has evolved over the centuries through parliamentary reforms—the administrative divisions of the United Kingdom are complex and non-uniform. The UK is technically a union of four essentially independent countries (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales).
Within each country, the administrative divisions of government vary somewhat according to how they are structured and how much governing authority is devolved to them from the central government. Generally speaking, the UK has five levels of government. They are (in descending order of size and scope of authority): country, region, county, district, and parish.
